Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock with parallel layering and a uniform texture. The sedimentary stone is composed of clay or volcanic ash. Multi-layered slate forms from the metamorphism of shale (soft claystone). When shale is subjected to high heat and pressure, it flattens into slate. The mineral composition of slate includes pyrite, chlorite, biotite, muscovite, and quartz. Slate is resistant to stains, spilled acids, and fire.
