The short answer is not every natural stone paving installation must be sealed, but sealing is often recommended when the goal is to reduce water absorption, staining, weathering, and maintenance. The correct sealer should be selected according to the type of stone, its finish, location, and expected exposure to water and stains.
What Does a Waterproof Sealer Do?
A stone sealer penetrates or coats the surface of the natural stone and helps reduce the amount of water and contaminants that can enter the pores. Depending on the product, a suitable sealer can help:
Reduce water absorption
Minimize staining from dirt, oil, food, and other contaminants
Make routine cleaning easier
Reduce the effects of weather and moisture

How to Use Waterproof Sealer on Natural Stone Paving
Waterproof sealer should not simply be applied to every stone surface. The type of stone, surface finish, location, moisture exposure, and selected sealer all need to be considered before application.
Step 1: Clean the Paving Thoroughly
Before applying sealer, the paving must be cleaned and free from dust, dirt, cement residue, oil, algae, and previous surface treatments.
Use a suitable pH-neutral stone cleaner and a soft brush or suitable cleaning equipment. After cleaning, rinse the surface thoroughly and allow it to dry completely.
Do not seal dirty or damp paving, as contaminants or trapped moisture can become locked beneath the sealer and affect the final appearance.
Step 2: Check the Stone and Surface Condition
The stone is fully installed and securely fixed.
Joints and grout are properly cured.
There are no loose or damaged stones.
The surface is free from efflorescence and construction residue.
The paving is sufficiently dry.

Maintenance After Sealing
Sealed paving should still be cleaned regularly. Use a suitable pH-neutral stone cleaner and avoid aggressive acidic or highly alkaline chemicals unless they are specifically confirmed as safe for the particular stone and sealer.
Over time, the effectiveness of a sealer can decrease because of weather exposure, foot traffic, cleaning and general wear. Re-sealing should therefore be based on the condition and performance of the paving rather than applying a new coat automatically every year.
Typical Sealer Durability
For natural stone paving, the durability of a waterproof sealer depends heavily on the stone type, sealer quality, exposure, and traffic.

Important: Waterproof Sealer Does Not Make Stone Completely Waterproof
A waterproof sealer generally reduces water absorption rather than making natural stone 100% waterproof. Natural stone remains a porous material, and moisture may still enter through the stone, joints, edges or underlying substrate.
Therefore, sealing should be considered part of an overall paving protection system rather than a replacement for correct installation, drainage, waterproofing and properly constructed joints.
A good sealer should protect the natural stone without hiding its natural character. For most outdoor paving, the objective is not to make the stone completely waterproof, but to reduce water and contaminant absorption while allowing the paving to remain durable, breathable, and natural-looking.
